Occaneechee Tribal Heritage Day

We went on a field trip to learn more about a local Native American Tribe.  It was a beautiful day and a wonderful experience to learn hands on about this tribe.   DSC_0005

She is one of the elders of the tribe.  She really enjoys sharing about her family history!  We enjoyed listening to her!DSC_0016

This cabin behind him is one that he grew up in.  He shared about living in the 20 century.

She showed us food which was stored in turtle shells (They ate lots of turtle!)

We got to touch the different animal skins…rabbit, wolf, coyote, deer,and buffalo among a few.  DSC_0043 DSC_0063

This was a demonstration of the fishing and hunting weaponry.  He shot a bow and arrow and used a sling shot.

These were different tools used.  He demonstrated making a blow dart out of thistle as well as how to throw using a sling shot similar to David and Goliath.  He also demonstrated how sharp a shark’s tooth is…he used the side to shave the hair off his arm.

The kids loved retrieving this large arrow that the man threw using one of his tools.

We learned some about how they harvested crops especially their main crop…tobacco.

Afterwards, we had a picnic and then the kids enjoyed playing together in the woods.  We Moms enjoyed chatting.
